Periods.

I’m not sure I would say this is still a taboo topic in 2019. Woman along with the media have come a long way from the days that we didn’t speak of such personal bloody things and we most definitely didn’t have advertising on tv or magazines. There is however room for improvement and I believe education is a good start. Quite simply when we are exposed to information, articles and conversation we have opportunity to grow. And I do mean the more yucky, lumpy, painful grotty part of having our periods.  I am ALL about growth! This blog is about How 4 seeds changed my mood!

 

PAIN, MOODS AND BLOOD

It’s a little too much information, but after all how I discovered the already popular Seed Cycling was because I was all of the above;

In pain, some serious and wacky moods and the blood (heavy/light) I couldn’t predict one hour to the next and with the word ‘menopause’ being thrown around a little more than when I was 20 (obviously) I started to care more about this part of being a woman.

So a snap shot into my ‘monthly’ it was for all of my 20’s and until mid 30’s pretty much the perfect period – every 31 days, bled lightly for 3 days and I had some 5/10 pain the day before and the day of period joining me. After I had my son at 30 I was having more conversations than ever about periods and hearing about the heavy ‘bucket loads’ and the frequency. Initially I listened and thought I was some what lucky but also figured maybe it was just good genes by the woman in my family that I didn’t have these issues.

Then, it happened to me.

Just as my period would finish and I had no more food or tissues left in the house I would get my period AGAIN! like What the F*ck right! I changed, my period was arriving whenever she felt like it! 30 days then 25, then 21, then 26 then 20 it was a mess. Know the rollercoaster? This information might be just for you!

So I started my own conversations, with my mentor, with my friends, with my naturopath, my doctor and even with my physio!

Simply put, seed cycling involves eating specific seeds during the two different phases of your monthly cycle. The technique described here is based on a 30-day cycle, though most women’s cycles tend to run between 25 and 36 days. Only 10 to 15% of women have cycles that are exactly 28 to 30 days. Day 1 is counted as the first day of a period.

The most important part of Seed Cycling is the timing of eating the seeds depending on where you are at any given day in your cycle yourself.

There’s two main stages of our periods; From the 1st day we bleed to ovulation which is roughly 14 days – this stage is called the Folicular Phase and the second is from Ovulation day until the day before you get your period which could be another 14 days this phase is called the Luteal Phase .

When to start seed cycling

Days 1-14 (the first day of your period through ovulation): eat 1 tbsp daily of both flax and pumpkin seeds to support estrogen production and metabolism.

  • FLAX & PUMPKIN– Contain necessary nutrients for estrogen production. Also contain lignans (flax), which help to bind excess estrogen so that it can be eliminated from the body and prevent estrogen dominance.

Days 15-28: eat 1 tbsp daily of both sesame and sunflower seeds to boost progesterone production and metabolism.

  • SESAME & SUNFLOWER: High in selenium and vitamin E which are known to stimulate progesterone production.

If you know you ovulate on day 17 of your cycle and not day 14, adjust the days of cycling so you switch to the sesame and sunflower phase right after you ovulate
